as we countdown to the supposed date of the release of the a level results, i will keep u excited with a special theme week on what to do before, on the day, and after getting ur results.

UPDATE: 6th mar confirmed le!

i will be going backwards to keep the excitement level at its peak on the day before the big one, so let's talk abt career and future prospects.

doctor. lawyer. engineer. the big 3.

a lot of u are aiming at such career paths. of course they aren't easy to achieve - have u seen the admission grades for last year? if u havent, go take a look.

really, erm, impressive stuff.

not just for the big 3.

it's for everything.

maybe that's why they made the papers so damn hard this year.

as u know, im dr cynic in training, and my job is to make sure ur not looking at green meadows and golden sunshine and hopping bunnies but the helm's deep battle from lord of the rings.

so what happens if u dun make the cut?

cut is ambiguous and really depends on ur targets. it could be 1) did well but not well enough to get the prestigious scholarship, 2) didn't do well enough to get the course u want but can still study other decent courses, 3) didn't do well to get into uni.

my focus today will be on #3, because i have absolutely no idea what i wrote in all the papers other than history and gp and thus my confidence level is as low as the bottom of a sea trench.

but because im ur friend and doc and here to treat and advise u, i shall touch on #1 and #2 as well.

#1: did well but not well enough to get the prestigious scholarship

im sure u would be good enough to get other scholarships, if ur willing to keep an open mind. and even if u dun, what's the big deal? i shall say it to ur face - u didnt spend 12 years leading a life that revolved around a scholarship. newton didnt have a scholarship in his time. einstein certainly didn't have a opportunity to get a dsta scholarship to discover his e=mc2 for the atomic bomb. reagan didn't have sth like a psc scholarship to end the cold war.

my point is, if u have a passion for what u want to study, just keep going and with that 5As of urs, im sure opportunities will come once u get ur degree.

shit why do i sound so nice.

i must be more harsh.

ok, translation: don't be an asshole and complain abt what u din get when u've alr accomplished q a fair bit compared to others, and move the fuck on.

#2: didn't do well enough to get the course u want but can still study other decent courses

there are 2 cases for this.

example: u really wanted to be a doctor and SAVE LIVES vs u wanted to sit in a nice reclining chair and talk some rubbish and earn big bucks.

if u weren't fast enough, im alr getting cyncial abt the first case.

so u couldn't get into med sch because of ur grades. but u still want to SAVE LIVES.

but u din specify whose lives u want to save. did it ever occur to u that u could SAVE animal LIVES?

we need passionate vets who will look after animals and bring happiness back to worried pet owners.

or how abt a herbalist? u can SAVE human LIVES with ur knowledge of the use of medicinal plants. although i dun really know what relevant course is available. enquire with eu yan sang.

firemen SAVE LIVES too.

so does jesus.

im sorry but that position is currently occupied.

actually i wonder if jesus sits in a reclining chair too. hmm.

on to case 2. if u wanted to earn easy money, i believe ur instant reaction would be to go 'lawyer lor'.

im sry, but pls refer to the 4th paragraph earlier.

actually law REALLY seemed to be the next best alternative. u just go and talk rubbish and u earn big money.

but u dun get to sit on the reclining chair when u talk. in fact u have to stand a lot.

r u willing to sacrifice the comfort of ur legs?

anw may i suggest something?

go study the art of persuasive talking, along with speaking with confidence, and when u graduate be a con man.

that's really easy money for u. although sometimes it may be gold chains, rings, necklaces and other valuables.

just dun go to the same hdb estate twice.

#3: didn't do well to get into uni.

the worst-case scenario.

appeal, poly or work. there's only 3 options and 2 if the first one didn't work out.

well u could always go to australia the land of the rejects if money wasnt a problem.

anw, let's talk abt some viable career options for someone without a degree.

1) farmer

even such a simple occupation title has its complexities. there're 2 main types of farming - agriculture and livestock and then they can be further broken down into more specific areas. aeroponics, hydroponics, cattle, bee, slaves.. it's a really diversified occupation.

in fact, with reference to case 1 in scenario 2 mentioned earlier, u could SAVE LIVES as a farmer!

by making sure ur cows are well-fed and the chickens are kept mostly indoors and have no contact outisde, ur minimising the risk of mad cow disease and bird flu!

by making sure ur vegetables are grown in a clean environment and without the use of pesticides, u reduce the risk of us growing another finger or having blue skin.

australia is a good place because it has lots of arable land, but if u still remembered ur economics u will know that u may get crowded out by bigger firms, even oligopolies among the local farmers.

if u could manage to operate in africa, u would have performed a miracle. u would become jesus in the eyes of the poor, starving africans. you would be SAVING LIVES!

just dun go to china.

2) run a pmc.

a pmc is short for private military corporation.

an ideal pmc these days would not be to take part in the iraq/afghanistan conflicts.

nor should u start ur own.

instead u should use ur arsenal, firepower and manpower to protect animals from those fucking poachers.

governments in africa and india are unwilling to invest in animal protection.

that's where u step in.

and u SAVE animal LIVES!

u could also initiate guerilla attacks on factories which contribute to global warming, especially chinese ones.

just be warned tt ur going to launch war on the country with the biggest population in the world.

and be careful not to destroy factories that make ur boots and sew ur uniforms.

3) transporter

we've established in my earlier post tt singaporeans love cars.

if u like to drive, why not be a chauffeur?

no not an ahmad who drives for the towkays.

ur cool, so drive impt ppl around.

ceos, diplomats, celebrities. all the foreign vips to singapore can be ur clients.

u drive a nice car. u earn good money. ur killing two birds w one stone!

although how to get the car in the first place is a good qn.
